Following weeks of speculative rumors, Pierpaolo Piccioli has been formally appointed as Balenciaga's new creative director. The ex-Valentino designer will commence his new position on July 10, with his inaugural collection for the Kering-owned business set to be unveiled in October.

In a statement, Piccioli remarked, “Balenciaga owes its current status to all those who have forged the path.” Throughout its various periods of evolution and transformation, it has consistently maintained the House's aesthetic principles. I am acquiring a brand replete with captivating prospects.

Piccioli departed from Valentino in March of the previous year, concluding a 25-year tenure at the Italian fashion business, including 16 years as creative director. The designer had already left the firm by the time of the announcement, indicating that his Fall 2024 collection, presented at Paris Fashion Week in February of the previous year, was his last work for Valentino.

He will over leadership of Balenciaga from Demna, who is set to unveil his final couture collection for the House in July before transitioning to Gucci. Regardless of personal opinion, Demna has revolutionized Balenciaga into one of the most sought-after brands in contemporary fashion, earning acclaim for his fashion week presentations—whether characterized by tempestuous snowstorms, murky mud pits, or dystopian stock exchanges—alongside the provocative wardrobes and celebrity-studded front rows that accompanied them, collectively asserting their status as the most discussed show of any fashion week.

Piccioli, celebrated for his avant-garde couture, vibrant color schemes—most notably Valentino Pink, which achieved significant acclaim—and his capacity to integrate traditional design methodologies into contemporary fashion, possesses a design lexicon infused with unmistakable romanticism akin to that of Cristóbal Balenciaga. Piccioli’s Balenciaga is expected to attract a more traditional clientele than the brand typically engages, particularly due to the designer’s exceptional couture expertise. His perspective on the brand is expected to diverge significantly from Demna’s ironic streetwear aesthetics, Erewhon collaborations, and Triple S sneakers; yet, Piccioli perceives his work as part of the "same narrative" as that of his predecessor.

“I must primarily express my gratitude to Demna,” Piccioli concluded. I have consistently esteemed his aptitude and foresight. I could not request a more exemplary transfer of responsibility. This provides me the opportunity to redefine the Maison, contributing an additional chapter with a fresh narrative.

Balenciaga CEO Gianfranco Gianangeli expressed his enthusiasm for this "new era" of the business. “Pierpaolo's creative vision will flourish, adeptly embodying Cristóbal Balenciaga's legacy while enhancing the House’s audacious creativity, profound heritage, and robust culture,” he added.

Kering Deputy CEO Francesca Bellettini stated, “[Pierpaolo] is among the most gifted and renowned designers of the present era.” “His expertise in Haute Couture, distinctive creativity, and fervor for savoir-faire rendered him the optimal selection for the House.”

Possessing transformative design skills, several esteemed endorsements, and a devoted following, Piccioli is strategically poised to excel in the House's highest position. The precise manifestation of the designer's Balenciaga remains uncertain, but anticipate Piccioli's debut in October.
