Following TAG Heuer's introduction of the Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph in 2024, it seemed inevitable that the brand's sophisticated rattrapante chronograph mechanism would be incorporated into the Carrera series. The moment has now arrived. The TAG Heuer Carrera Split-Seconds Chronograph introduces the rattrapante complexity to the Carrera collection, encased in a high-tech titanium housing and executed to haute horlogerie standards. Unveiled at the LVMH Watch Week in Milan, the 42mm split-seconds model, featuring the sophisticated Glassbox sapphire design, is the pinnacle of the collection, seamlessly integrating iconic design elements with contemporary craftsmanship.

The case design adheres to the established formula, with peaked lugs, a minimalist aesthetic, and racing functionality; nonetheless, all elements appear more refined, robust, and assertive. The 42mm case, constructed entirely from grade 5 titanium, features satin-brushed and polished surfaces and has a thickness of 15.17mm. The distinctive Glassbox sapphire crystal is fitted nearly flawlessly into the mid-case, uniting crystal and metal into a cohesive structure. A subtle pusher at 9 o’clock activates the split-seconds mechanism, while the rectangular chronograph start/stop and reset pushers are positioned beside the titanium crown. A sapphire exhibition caseback reveals the movement. The water resistance is rated at 30 meters.

The translucent sapphire dial distinctly differentiates this Carrera from the other models in the collection. It is not skeletonised in the conventional manner; however, it permits visibility of the mechanics while maintaining the classic configuration. Three sapphire subdials, positioned at 3 o’clock for chronograph minutes, at 9 o’clock for hours, both with red markers and hands, and at 6 o’clock for running seconds, are aligned on the same plane, enhancing depth and a three-dimensional effect. The anthracite flange incorporates a tachymeter scale that conforms to the curvature of the crystal, so avoiding parallax error. The rhodium-plated indexes and skeletonised hour and minute hands are infused with white Super-LumiNova. The white central chronograph hand and red lacquer split-seconds hand are prominent; the dial appears clear, contemporary, and distinctly Carrera.

The Calibre TH81-01 is a variant of the Monaco Split Seconds movement, the TH81-00. This automated split-seconds chronograph, crafted by Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier, operates at 36,000 vibrations per hour and boasts a power reserve of 65 hours (or 55 hours when the chronograph is activated). The movement comprises more than 350 components, with titanium bridges to minimise weight. The finishing surpasses that of most TAG Heuer models, featuring hand-bevelled edges, black-polished screws, and the brand's hand-engraved checkered-flag design on the plates. The column wheel guarantees accurate pusher operation. The TAG Heuer shield-shaped rotor, featuring a brushed finish and red gradient paint, imparts a unique aesthetic to the reverse perspective.

The Carrera Split-Seconds Chronograph features a black rubber strap embossed with a textile pattern and accented with red stitching, secured by a titanium folding clasp. The watch will be available from June 2026, becoming part of the Carrera's permanent collection, at a price of CHF 110,000. For further details and information, visit TAGHeuer.com.
