Pyjamas are experiencing a revival, transitioning from the bedroom to the streets.

“Sweet dreams are made of this,” crooned Annie Lennox – and if the advantages associated with the latest trend in pyjamas are to be trusted, there is greater significance to these words than previously acknowledged.

Underwear, panties, nightgowns, boxer shorts. These clothing, typically visible solely in the bedroom, imply a distinct sense of uninhibited naughtiness. Sleepwear? Not significantly. Considering that Generation Z is adopting styles reminiscent of their grandfathers, such as puffy cardigans and wide-leg trousers, it is perhaps unsurprising that pyjamas are experiencing a resurgence both under and outside of bedclothes.

Sacha Rose, CEO of the premium loungewear brand Derek Rose, contends that the ongoing resurgence of sleepwear is linked to evolving social norms. “It pertains less to nostalgia and more to the appreciation of rest and recuperation as integral components of contemporary living,” asserts Rose. In recent years, there has been a significant societal movement towards self-care and the prioritisation of leisure time. Men are increasingly open about their need for comfort and relaxation, and nightwear aligns perfectly with this preference.

The connection between sleepwear and well-being has led to the emergence of labels such as Hanro, Homebody, and David Gandy Wellwear, which incorporate organic fibres and aloe vera treatments in their garments to promote comfort during sleep. However, there are fundamental advantages associated with wearing appropriate attire to bed, beginning with the refutation of the notion that sleeping nude is beneficial for those who tend to feel warm. “It is a fallacy,” elucidates Andreas Palm, co-founder of the Stockholm-based business CDLP. Research conducted by the National Sleep Foundation indicates that sleep quality is more significantly affected by body temperature regulation and fabric breathability than by the absence of clothing. Permeable natural fibres such as lyocell or cotton-poplin facilitate moisture wicking, mitigate temperature variations, and safeguard the skin from allergens and abrasion. Palm states: 'Psychologically, nightwear can serve as a "off switch," signalling to the body that it is time to relax.'

Tom Pyne, the founder of Chelsea Peers, recently conducted a survey titled To Bare or Wear?, which revealed that 74 percent of males in the UK prefer to wear something in bed. “It was confirmed that the majority of men prefer to be attired for relaxation; notably, 45 percent of surveyed men who wear pyjamas indicated that they facilitate relaxation and unwinding at day’s end,” states Pyne, who endorses organic cotton and Tencel™ modal for their efficacy in temperature regulation and promoting deep sleep.

Derek Rose, a manufacturer of silk pyjamas that are especially gentle on sensitive skin, has refined the design of its sleepwear throughout the past century. Derek Rose, Sacha Rose’s grandfather, pioneered vertical buttonholes that enhance fabric flexibility during movement, while elasticised waists and French seams mitigate chafing. Sacha Rose states, "Considering that individuals typically spend approximately one-third of their lives in bed, the choice of attire is of paramount importance." When seeking suitable pyjamas for restorative sleep, he recommends beginning with the fabric. It must be gentle on the skin, breathable, and sufficiently resilient to endure over time. Evaluate the design elements: Are the seams comfortable? Does the waistband provide adequate mobility? Is the cut sufficiently generous to permit freedom of movement without appearing unkempt?

In recent years, pyjamas have emerged from obscurity, as prominent men choose to wear sleepwear in public settings. Fashion enthusiasts may attribute the 'nightwear as daywear' trend to the whimsical designer Marc Jacobs, who notably donned floral-printed pyjamas while taking his bow on the runway during his AW23 Louis Vuitton show. Such a spectacle would undoubtedly be accepted in the diverse highest levels of high fashion; but, males beyond this sphere have also embraced the aesthetic with ease. In 2020, Patrick Schwarzenegger took a Christmas Day stroll with his mother in their Californian area, dressed in a striped coordinated pyjama set and trainers. For the Daily Mail, it was a sensational story, although traditionalists likely perceived him as having emerged from a juvenile detention facility.

Can ordinary individuals get the appearance without resembling sleepwalkers? What is the purpose, aside than extending the use of garments that would otherwise be deemed obsolete? Palm has developed CDLP based on this concept, crafting his pyjamas from modern materials like as silk-poplin, with mother of pearl buttons and practical pockets, rendering them suitable for wear outside the bedroom. “The objective is to exude elegance in bed or on a hotel balcony, akin to the experience of entering a dinner party,” states Palm. Many men use the pyjama shirt unbuttoned over a tank top or t-shirt, while the pyjama trousers pair effectively with a thicker knit or a tailored overshirt. It centres on contrast - harmonising the gentleness of nightwear with more structured elements. It elucidates the increasing appeal of sophisticated, comfort-oriented sleepwear from British tailoring brands such as Turnbull & Asser and Thom Sweeney.

Rose has observed his works displayed in various settings and appropriately designed. Recently, I observed a man in his late twenties exiting a café in a Swiss mountain village, adorned in a pair of our patterned lounge trousers. It appears he wears them in public throughout the year. On a sunny day, he would combine them with a white t-shirt, a Gyros necklace, a blue marl Loro Piana cardigan, and Hermès sheepskin slip-on sandals. He appeared significantly more stylish than I did.

This may appear to be an ideal justification for simply getting out of bed to purchase a pint of milk; nevertheless, please ensure you brush your teeth and groom your unkempt hair for the sake of public decorum.
