Grand Seiko's traditional mechanical GMT receives a seasonal enhancement including two new dials influenced by the natural splendour of Shizukuishi.

Among the extensive and diverse collection of Grand Seiko, few models exert as much influence over the enthusiast community as the Elegance GMT SBGM221. Featuring an ivory dial, tempered blue hand, and rounded casing, it has long been the benchmark for a formal, travel-ready timepiece. The company is now augmenting this cherished collection with two new models that reflect the seasonal transitions of Japan: the SBGM255 Snowdrop and SBGM257 Moondrop.

The architecture retains a classic familiarity, while the execution is distinctly innovative, incorporating the textures of winter and autumn onto the wrist. Grand Seiko frequently draws inspiration from the natural environment near its production facilities, which may explain the sense of déjà vu associated with these SBGM models. The emphasis of these new models is on the ephemeral beauty of the changing seasons at the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi.

The SBGM255 Snowdrop encapsulates the transition from winter to spring. As the snow melts beneath the intensifying sun, it creates droplets that shimmer with potential - a phenomena exquisitely depicted on the white patterned dial. The radiant and hopeful appearance suggests the imminent arrival of lush life.

Conversely, the SBGM257 Moondrop examines the opposite side of the calendar. It conjures a brisk autumn evening illuminated by moonlight, with dew accumulating in the chilling atmosphere. The dial is a vibrant, textured blue, reflecting the "resplendent gleam" of dew under moonlight and the profound richness of autumn.

Both new models exhibit the identical case architecture that has established the Grand Seiko mechanical GMT as a mainstay since 2010. The stainless steel case has a traditional diameter of 39.5mm, showcasing refined round curves and tapered lugs that originate from the inaugural Grand Seiko of 1960.

The “Snowdrop” showcases a rhodium-plated 24-hour hand, tempered to an exquisite blue hue, offering a striking contrast against the white dial. Simultaneously, the "Moondrop" features a navy dial complemented with a 24-hour hand in opulent gold, reflecting the warmth of the harvest moon. Both have box sapphire crystals that enhance the old style and are accompanied by crocodile leather straps with buckles, making them an appropriately formal selection for this collection.

The watches are driven by the durable Calibre 9S66. This automated movement is a genuine GMT, permitting the local hour hand to be set in one-hour increments without halting the seconds hand — a crucial feature for travellers. The movement, observable through the sapphire crystal caseback, boasts a remarkable power reserve and an accuracy rating of +5 to -3 seconds daily.
