The casting marks a strategic reunion between Gunn and Lillard, signaling the DC Universe's continued push to integrate seasoned talent into its high-stakes reboot.

Man of Tomorrow is slated for theatrical release on July 9, 2027. James Gunn and DC Studios are officially broadening the Man of Steel mythology with the announcement of Matthew Lillard's inclusion in the cast of the forthcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.
Man of Tomorrow serves as a technical enhancement of the DCU and a significant cultural reunion, commemorating 25 years since Lillard and Gunn partnered on the live-action Scooby-Doo franchise. This hybrid casting method features Lillard joining a cast that already comprises David Corenswet as the titular hero, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Frank Eidinger. Lillard's precise role is undisclosed, however his participation indicates an ongoing "Lillardissance," placing the actor in one of the most eagerly awaited major releases of the decade.
On the technical side, the production is adopting a new visual approach with cinematographer Sam McCurdy (Shōgun) taking charge of the sequel's cinematography. The film's narrative structure apparently diverges from the origin-story elements of its predecessor, concentrating instead on a complex, "uneasy alliance" between Superman and Luthor. This tonal shift indicates a more intricate, politically infused examination of Metropolis, anchored by the relocation of production to Atlanta's cutting-edge facilities.
